Chapter 4

Georgianna felt as if she could not walk another step by the time Braden finally called them to a stop. He had not been lying when he said they would not pause for long. They had been on the road for the better part of two days, stopping only once to sleep and eat.

Georgianna had slept like a log and had woken up feeling as if she’d slept on one. Her legs screamed and her feet throbbed.

“We’ll set the tents up and stay a little longer,” Braden assured them.

Kalista sat down on the wet grass, looking as tired as Georgianna felt.

Like the first, the second clearing appeared from nowhere. First they were surrounded by dense foliage and then suddenly, it stopped. The space sat at the shore of the creek and was just large enough for the two tents, the horses and them. Georgianna appreciated the clouds above, knowing she would be more tired if the sun had beat on them the entire time.

“How much longer?” Kalista asked. Her eyes closed as she lay back on the grass.

“At least a week on foot.” Caldwell surprised Georgianna by answering.

“You’ve been to Ceravique?”

Caldwell looked from Kalista, to her, and then to Braden. Georgianna watched Braden shake his head slightly. Most likely, he hoped she wouldn’t notice. Caldwell didn’t answer.

“Caldwell, when were you there?”

He turned his back on her and retrieved the packs from Sunfire, pulling out the large cloths that would become tents. Georgianna examined Braden. He held her gaze as if daring her to press the issue.

“I’m going to wash,” she snapped, knowing Braden wouldn’t tell her anything he didn’t want to.

“Have Kalista join you,” Braden said.

On cue, Kalista snored softly.

“No.” Braden jerked forward as if to argue. Georgianna put up a hand, silencing him. “I’ll just go a ways downstream. You’ll be able to hear if so much as a deer sneaks up on me.” She spun away, giving him no time to argue. She wanted to be without the two secretive men for a while and, truth be told, she really needed to wash.

Georgianna carefully picked her way down the edge of the creek. She looked back a few times and once the clearing was out of sight, finally stopping at a small bank. She quickly pulled off her jacket and dunked it in the freezing water.

“Y-y-you wanted th-th-th-this,” she cursed herself. After working most of the dirt and grime out, she hung the jacket on a tree. She kept her two layers on as she washed them, hoping they would block some of the cold. They didn’t. Finally, she stripped down and laid the frock and slip down to dry on a flat, dry rock. She skipped back to the water and dunked herself, as she had when she was a child swimming at the nearby river.

Georgianna shivered and almost bit off her tongue but forced her body to stay submerged until the shivers lessened slightly. It was too late in the season and too dark a day for them to go away completely.
